Ralph Michaelis / "Candy Coral"

This is a big, dramatic piece. The dark coloring in the center is more common in Cook pine than Norfolk. This vase was made just prior to the seashellish series. It was part of an exploration into various undersea themes such as coral and seaweed. The shapes are similar to those I used in the "Puka" series. These do not pierce the bowl but rather define the "coral" which entwines it. In this piece I also see the dappling of sunlight on the underwater formations close to shore.

Medium: Cook Pine (arucaria columnaris)
H 16in x W 19in
